July 18th – July 24th

The Valley Nerd Watch!

We saw The Adventure Zone in Boston! Our extremely cool friend wore a really neat Hurley costume, and Hurley is the name of one of the characters appearing in The Adventure Zone, a podcast about three nice boys playing D&D with their dad! It was a good show and we are glad we got to see it. People there seemed quite nice, good job Boston! Also, we saw a kitten, but that was unrelated to show.

Today we want to recommend you take a look at the wonderful work in “Scenes from a Cafe Counter!” It’s a collection by local artist and writer and editor Alex Chautin. It pulls together a bunch of different stories from cafe workers that run the gamut from highfalutin paens to the power of the brew to touching tales about community to stories about ridiculous customers.

It’s got some good art and some top-quality words, and sometimes both of them together in a new format we’re calling a “visual novel”. You should take a look right now! They’re selling copies at Modern Myths in Northampton! Also it comes with a neat little sleeve like how you put sleeves around coffee cups!

Also, sad news this week: TopatoCon 2 is canceled. We’re not certain the exact reasons, but it is unfortunate and we’re sad. TopatoCon was great! We’re hoping next year it goes off without a hitch. The good news is that the Drink and Draw sessions are still on, with the next one happening August 10th at the 121 Club in Eastworks! It’s a great time with great people.

Play Warhammer? This one doesn’t have a lot of info attached. We’re going to assume it’s got a price-tag attached because it’s Warhammer… but maybe it’s a training thing? That would make sense. So probably you will be given a tutorial on effective Warhammer play!
Comics n’ More [31 Union Street, Easthampton MA 01027] at 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Ed Popielarzyk Magic Show
Okay this description is leading us on quite a garden path. They say he’s a favorite local musician who’s bringing the maaaagic… of laughter. Hell’s bells he’d better be making things appear and/or disappear and not just telling jokes and making us realize that the true Treasure of the Sierra Madre was friendship all along.
Wednesday, July 20th
Palmer Public Library [1455 N Main St, Palmer, MA 01069] at 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Tanglewood Marionettes’ present The Fairy Circus
A terrifying magically animated marionette show! We assume. It’s a fairy circus and they specifically say it’s the marionettes presenting it, not other people using marionettes to present something. So yeah we’re assuming this is magic.

Sunderland Public Library [20 School St., Sunderland, MA 01375] at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Adventures in babysitting is a movie that’s just about as weird as you remember it being. Give it another watch at the library, or experience for the first time this tale of irresponsible children!
Wednesday, July 20th
Forbes Library [20 West St, Northampton, MA 01060] at 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Hail, Caesar!
Hail, Caesar! is a Coen Brothers comedy of the “eh, mostly alright” variety by most of the accounts we’ve read. Oh, and with a real cool Channing Tatum dance sequence so if you’re into that give it a look!
Saturday, July 23rd
Jones Library [43 Amity St., Amherst, MA 01002] at 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Hot Summer Saturday Movie Matinee: Hoosiers
Hoosiers is a movie about a sports team that triumphs despite the odds, but it’s one of the ones from early enough that the parts that seem cliche are mostly just early examples of the form. We think!

RPGs:

Thursday, July 21st
Palmer Public Library [1455 N Main St, Palmer, MA 01069] at 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
RPG Club
Tired of the same old grind? Why not try adventuring? Well, okay, we totally understand why not in the context of actual real life. Spelunking with a sword seems terrifying and not particularly rewarding in our world. But with the right game, you can have a grand time killing various magical things in caves with friends!
Saturday, July 23rd
Chesterfield Scout Reservation [22 Sugar Hill Rd., Chesterfield, MA] at 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Market of the Moons Day 1
The Market appears but once a year! Blurring the line between our own realm and that hive of terror the next realm over, the realm of the fairies. It’s fun to adventure in, sure, but let’s be real the place is basically a nonstop catastrophe of Shakespearean tragicomedy. Meet a bunch of fairies, watch battles, dance, just hang out and browse the interesting wares on display! Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and children under 5 are free because they’re basically just going to get replaced with Changelings.
Sunday, July 24th
Chesterfield Scout Reservation [22 Sugar Hill Rd., Chesterfield, MA] at 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Market of the Moons Day 2
Seriously though, check your under-5 children’s ears after you visit the Market. Usually takes a few days for them to really tamp down the pointiness, and that’s basically the only way you’ve got to check if they’re a Changeling.

Science:

Saturday, July 23rd
Sunderland Public Library [20 School St., Sunderland, MA 01375] at 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Reptiles Rock!
Reptiles! They’re neat, they’re weird, they have brains that basically are just sort of smooth pebbles and most of what they do seems autonomic, but they also manage to be really adorable somehow and it’s super hard not to anthropomorphize their behavior! You can meet a 9 foot boa, alligators, tortoises, snakes (a boa is a snake but we assume much smaller snakes), frogs, lizards, and more! Learn about them and also hold them!

Video Games:

Monday, July 18th
Greenfield Public Library [402 Main St, Greenfield, MA 01301] at 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Minecraft Group
Minecraft your evening away at the library! Make new friends!
Wednesday, July 20th
Palmer Public Library [1455 N Main St, Palmer, MA 01069] at 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Make Your Own Video Game Workshop
Learn how to make a video game! It’s presented by the Rhode Island Computer Museum, which is a neat thing we didn’t know existed until we read this! And by this, we’re referring to the text on screen we just nodded toward, before realizing that in a whole host of ways that’s not actually a very useful method of indicating information to any of our readers. Ages 10 and up, and you need to pre-register! Call 413-283-3330 or contact mdecara@palmer.lib.ma.us!
