July 25th – July 31st

The Valley Nerd Watch!

This issue of the Nerd Watch was written on a computer with a Windows 10 install that still thinks that the default system language should be Spanish, which we have to be honest is annoying in ways we had not considered. We spent a while trying to fix it but yeesh like everything that seems like it should be a really simple fix it was a huge hassle when the default fix didn’t appear to apply. Anyway! Point is, we’re such hard workers and you’re so proud of us for making it through thank you thank you.

We want to point out a couple things up top! First off, a lovely person informed us of the Western Mass Go Club – which meets at the Roost in Northampton Thursdays at 7pm – a while back and we want to make sure to highlight it before it goes to the Weekly Events page! Go is a great game, and we figure that if you’re decent at it odds are you’re absolutely crushing any casually interested acquaintances so why not try your luck against some like-minded folks AND get some coffee/booze at the Roost?

Second, you should check out Dank Dungeons! It’s a cute RPG actual-play show about Dungeon World produced locally! It’s neat and we’re going to write up a little bit about our experience speaking with the cast and our own impression of the series so far later this week! It will be great! Why didn’t we post it BEFORE the show began? Well. Look … look.

Look… down below! There’s information for you!

Donate to the Patreon! Go check out the Valley Creators page! As always, be sure to check out the Weekly Events page! There are a lot of fun things happening this and every week! And don’t forget to check out the updated Book Clubs List!

Smoothie Making Party and Harry Potter Trivia
Celebrate the end of summer reading by making a smoothie! Also, Harry Potter trivia, to celebrate the release of the new book! The link between these two activities is at best tenuous, but we think it’s best to follow the wise old saying and not look a gift smoothie in the eye because then it’ll know your secrets. Sign up in advance at the library or by phone at 413-665-2642!

David Daley, Author of Rat F**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy
Politics! The game we all kind of have to play regardless of how terrifying it is. David Daley, editor in chief of Salon, lays out the details of an operation on the part of Republicans to get a majority in the legislature in 2010. It’s seems pretty fascinating! But what the heck could Ratf**ked mean? Those asterixes completely prevent us from parsing the mystery word!

Entertainment:

Saturday, July 30th
Odyssey Bookshop [Mount Holyoke College, 9 College St, South Hadley, MA 01075] at 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Ed Popielarzyk Magic Show
Magic! As a professional balloonster, magic-maker, and general purpose entertainer, Ed takes a lot of pride in bringing smiles to faces! He can also make a duck riding a motorcycle out of balloons, which is a skill that comes up a lot more often than you’d think.
Friday, July 29th
Forbes Library [20 West St, Northampton, MA 01060] at 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM
Come Play Quidditch!
Join librarians for a game of Quidditch on the lawn! By virtue of their extensive studies, it is well known that librarians are absolute dab hands at Quidditch. The fact that people with Library Science degrees also tend to take elective Library Magic courses helps too!
Tuesday, July 26th
Odyssey Bookshop [Mount Holyoke College, 9 College St, South Hadley, MA 01075] at 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Improv Workshop with Lisa Papademetriou, Molly B. Burnham, and Heidi Hass
Children ages 6 and up can start on a journey that bifurcates into both the most excellent and the most intensely uncomfortably bad comedy around! Local authors will try to teach you the ins and outs of being a successful improv performer to make sure you trend toward funny rather than excruciating. It’ll be delightful! There’s a non-refundable $5 supply fee per child, and you should call 413-534-7307 or email kids@odysseybks.com to sign up!
Sunderland Public Library [20 School St., Sunderland, MA 01375] at 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Malik the Magic Guy
He’s magic! And wait wait wait he brings the magic of sports to life with sports-based magic tricks? … We’ve honestly never considered this a possible mixture of entertainment media. Intriguing. He also demonstrates games and activities from other cultures, presumably magical ones like centaur races and spell-slinging and the like.
Forbes Library [20 West St, Northampton, MA 01060] at 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM
Zoo on the Go!
Forest Park Zoo will stop by the library with some animal friends! They will then take these friends away from you, because the world is a cruel and broken place. But you will totally get to hang for a bit, because the light of hope is eternal. Register at the children’s desk!

Movies:

Sunday, July 31st
Yiddish Book Center [1021 West St., Amherst, MA 01002] at 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Morgenthau
See the history of three generations of Morgenthau men, fighting for international action against the genocide of Armenians, rescuing Jews during the Holocaust, and struggling to reduce crime and prosecute corruption in New York City. A lasting testament to the value of public service! Students $4, Members $6, General Admission $8!
The Quarters [8 Railroad St., Hadley, MA] at 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM
Happy Birthday Harry Potter
Harry’s birthday is July 31st, and there’s a new book out! There’s going to be decorations and food and drink specials and there will be prizes for the best costumes! Plus they’re going to play Potter on the projector! Or, if they’re really smart they’ll play Wizard People, Dear Reader on the projector!
Wednesday, July 27th
Forbes Library [20 West St, Northampton, MA 01060] at 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM
A League of Their Own
Oh dang the only good movie about Baseball! It’s a free screening at the Baseball field in Florence! Bring a blanket, bring snacks, enjoy! No matter how much the inspiration grips you, avoid playing Baseball. There are too many other people on the field, this is not the time for Baseball.
