January 1st – January 7th

The Valley Nerd Watch!

Happy New Year!

Hopefully you’re starting off properly! That means a nice slow morning where you ideally do not need to do much of anything because this is that post holiday sort of thing where no matter what you feel like you’re not getting quite as much time off as you needed.

Hey here’s something to start your year off right: some of our own local luminaries, UMass undergrad Kevin Harrington and UMass Astronomy Professor Min Yun have discovered Outrageously Luminous Galaxies! Which is neat as heck!

It’s basically what it sounds like honestly! They found galaxies that are so gigantically amazingly bright that they outshine every other thing we’ve ever found in the entire universe by orders of magnitude!

In fact, it’s a good indicator that maybe we gotta pull back on our naming conventions. Like they already have Ultra-Luminous and Hyper-Luminous objects, so now these have to be called something that puts into perspective just how much brighter they are. We don’t have much space to move if we find brighter objects! They’ve been calling them Outrageously Luminous and we like that so let’s go with that!

It’s pretty awesome that this groundbreaking work was done at our own UMass Amherst!

We hope you started off the year right, and we are here for all your local events and local creator news in 2017. You’re an excellent audience and we think each and every person who reads this newsletter deserves a fun time all the time.

Happy New Year!
