December 16th – 22nd

We’re really excited to see the semi-re-christening of Wednesday Games to “Start Playing” Games (get it)? There are now we think four separate events across Easthampton and Northampton, and they’re all wonderful! You should go to all of them, given of course that you’d like to play a lot of boardgames.

Two are happening this week! One at the Brass Cat (7:00PM – 11:30PM Wednesday) and one at Artifact Cider (6:00PM – 10:00PM Thursday)!

Also we played a bunch of Wildermyth this past week, and we wholeheartedly recommend it! It’s a surprisingly effective combo of tactical and strategic map gameplay. It’s a familiar formula from a lot of tactics games but it’s extremely effectively deployed.

What works so nicely is that it has a relatively restricted scope, but hits a ton of the key points that makes these games fun. All your characters grow and change over time, with events giving them scars, removing limbs, changing their eyes into gems, and giving them cooler looking gear. The map doesn’t have a ton of different interactions, but they’re all significant. And the campaign we played never gave us a chance to do everything, no matter how much we wanted to do it. Which is perfect! Combat is similarly straightforward, but full of significant choices about what to do when. It’s hitting a point somewhere between Into the Breach and XCOM, which is a hell of a thing to do!

Also we’re skipping Christmas, at least as a whole newsletter. Because it’s the holidays! Which is fun but also a lot. We hope you have a nice holiday season.

Go check out the Valley Creators page! As always, be sure to check out our Patreon! And don’t forget to check out the Book Clubs List!

Writer in Residence Series: To Be A Part
Somehow there are something like ten paragraphs on this event description page, but all we’re getting out of this is that there is probably either a panel discussion or a series of readings.

Board Games:

Tuesday, December 17th
Prodigy Minigolf & Gameroom [Eastworks, 116 Pleasant St, Easthampton MA] at 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM
Tabletop Tuesday
“From dungeon delving to spell casting, Tabletop Tuesdays have your board game fix covered for the week! Last week, a band of strangers took the roll of heroic adventures flushing out a perilous raider encampment in an ongoing game of Dungeons & Dragons. Meanwhile, across the room, spells were being cast and reversed at lightening speeds, as our local Magic the Gathering players duked it out. Interested in joining the fray? Tabletop Tuesdays are only $5 for access to our wide tables, extensive boardgame collection and of course lots of dice. If you’re a DM looking to lead your own band of adventurers, you get in for free! Plus you get access to countless DM resources, like map tiles and over 300 pre-painted token for heroes and monsters. Adventure awaits you at Prodigy.”
Wednesday, December 18th
Brass Cat [65 Cottage St #101, Easthampton, MA 01027] at 7:00 PM to 11:30 PM
Start Playing at the Cat!
Oooh! A re-branding! It’s sensible, because Wednesday Games doesn’t work if all the games aren’t on Wednesday! “Choo Choo! It’s train time! This week I’ll be featuring one of my favorite new to me games this year, Irish Gauge! Irish Gauge is a pretty standard train game in a lot of ways. You’ll acquire stocks which make you money, build train routes across a lovely green-hexy map and hope to be the richest rail baron in Ireland when the game ends. The twist? This one plays in an hour and is dead simple! I’ve already got 3-4 plays in and I continue to enjoy it. Watch It Played walkthrough: So come on out, enjoy a nice dark beverage and let’s play some games!”
Thursday, December 19th
Artifact Cider Project [34 N Maple St., Northampton, MA 01062] at 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Start Playing at Artifact!
“I am so excited! Are you? Well you should be! December 19th is the start of a monthly game night at Artifact Cider in Florence, MA! If you’ve never heard of Artifact, they are an amazing local cider house that has the best labels (and ciders!) you’ve ever seen. Every night they have a TON of options. For those of you who struggle with choice, you can also get a flight to try a few! On top of that, Wheelhouse is providing some delicious locally made flat breads as well. You HAVE to try one! So how are we kicking things off? With some ocean exploration! In Reef, players take on the role of a coral reef selecting colors and patterns in which to grow and expand. Players can choose to pick up a new card from a choice of four, or play a card that is already in hand. Each card provides two reef pieces and a pattern that scores points. Whoever has the most points when the reef pieces (or card deck) run out wins! How to Play Reef
